Bee pollen is a wondrous thing. It is collected by field bees as they flit from flower to flower and gets stored on their hind legs in baskets called pollen loads. The bees infuse the pollen with saliva and transport it to the hive where worker bees use it to make bee bread.
This bee gold is not only good for the bees but us too. Professional athletes take it for increased endurance and it has been shown to significantly decrease premenstrual symptoms. Not surprising, given that it is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytoprotective, anticarcinogenic, neuroprotective and cardioprotective.
But that’s not all!
It’s a complete food
Bee pollen is an apitherapeutic and considered one of the most complete foods as it has an almost perfect balance of nutrients. It is protein, vitamin and mineral rich, plus it contains essential fatty acids, flavonoids, leukotrienes, catechins, and phenolic acids. It has 250 identified compounds but it is so complex that it cannot be recreated in a lab.
Helps with weight loss
Bee pollen reduces cravings and supplies enzymes that help you extract and digest nutrients from food. It also helps feed the friendly flora in your gut, thereby boosting both your metabolism and immune system.
Increases longevity
In the 1940s, a Russian biologist studied centenarians in the Caucasus and discovered that a large percentage of those who lived to an unusually long age regularly ate bee pollen.
It’s antiallergic
Bee pollen works like the systemic sensitization doctors provide with allergy shots. It is suggested to start with a tiny amount of bee pollen and gradually increase the dose.
